Students are furnished large print or Braille textbooks as provided by state and federal statutes.
Braille or large type textbooks for students with visual impairments are requisitioned by the Manager of the VI Program through the Textbook Department.
Only students certified by the Texas Education Agency as being visually impaired are eligible to receive these books. (HISD Procedures 444.113)
The Manager for the Program for the Visually Impaired orders all large print and Braille textbooks for the district.
Itinerant teachers of the visually impaired will determine which students require these materials and complete order forms as needed.
As special textbooks are received, they are sent to the assigned students at their respective schools by the Textbook Director.
These books become part of the textbook inventory for each school.
At the end of the school year, all Braille and large print textbooks must be returned to the textbook warehouse using the same procedures as regular textbooks.
Assistive technology equipment furnished by Region IV for specific students is processed and inventoried through Region IV.
All other materials or assistive technology required for visually impaired students are processed and inventoried through the designated SERS Center.
Specific items may not be transferred to any other student without authorization by the VI Program Manager.
Equipment needing repair are returned to the designated SERS Center.
If the school mail is used, the equipment must be properly packed. The teacher should inform the SERS staff of the date mailed.
The SERS staff will process the repair requisition according to HISD procedures and arrange for repair.
The SERS staff will notify the sending teacher when the equipment is ready and arrange for either teacher pick-up or mail delivery.
If mailed, the teacher will inform the SERS staff when the equipment arrives at the school.
